The Medical Association

Registration with the French Medical Association

Registration with the French Medical Council is an essential step for any European doctor wishing to practice legally. Although European Directive 2005/36/EC provides for the automatic recognition of diplomas , the procedure remains regulated and requires a complete, structured application that complies with French requirements.

The aim of this approach is to ensure that every doctor joining the French healthcare system meets the standards of quality, competence and medical ethics.

The role of the Medical Association

The French Medical Association (Ordre des Médecins) is the independent authority responsible for regulating medical practice in France. It ensures the protection of patients and compliance with the code of ethics. In practical terms, its work is based on three essential pillars:

  • verification of the conformity of diplomas

  • the verification of integrity and the absence of disciplinary sanctions

  • official registration with the Order's Register, a mandatory condition for practicing

Without this registration, no medical activity is legally authorized in France.

Preparing the file: a strategic step

The quality of the application file directly influences processing times. An incomplete or poorly structured file can lead to additional requests and significantly prolong the procedure.

The documents generally required include:

  • the official registration form

  • a valid form of identification

  • the medical degree accompanied by a certified translation

  • a European certificate of conformity

  • a detailed CV outlining the entire career path

  • a recent criminal record extract

  • a certificate of non-radiation issued by the authority of the country of origin

Depending on the situation, an employment contract or a letter of intent can strengthen the coherence of the career plan. In some cases, proof of French proficiency may also be required.

File review and possible interview

Once submitted to the relevant Departmental Council of the Order of Physicians , the application undergoes a thorough analysis. The evaluation focuses in particular on:

  • the equivalence of the diploma with regard to French standards

  • the coherence of the installation project

  • understanding the French medical framework

An interview may be arranged to assess the level of French and the ability to integrate into the healthcare system.

Decision and authorization to practice

Once the application is approved, the doctor is registered with the Medical Council and receives their registration number. This approval allows:

  • to legally practice medicine in France

  • to prescribe procedures and treatments recognized by the Health Insurance

  • to be paid in a manner that complies with French legislation

Average processing times generally vary between 2 and 6 months , depending on the region and the quality of the application submitted.

Why structure your registration?

Even within the European framework, the registration process remains demanding. Thorough preparation allows you to anticipate administrative requirements, minimize common mistakes, and optimize processing times.

A structured approach significantly increases the chances of quickly obtaining authorization to practice in France, an essential condition for a successful professional establishment.
